The Department of Chemistry at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) offers an excellent environment for studies in chemistry. This is one of the most research active departments in BUET and has a faculty renowned internationally for its excellence in teaching and research. The department’s strong record of achievement is based on its research programs that are amenable to limited resource settings but at the same time are of high impact.
The department presently has about 20 faculty members, all of whom participate in the undergraduate and graduate educational programs and direct active research programs. The department offers chemistry courses to the undergraduate engineering students as well as to the postgraduate (M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D.) chemistry students. Our teaching and research programs cover the major areas of chemistry, including inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry. More specialized areas such as environmental chemistry, surfaces and materials chemistry, nanoscience, polymer chemistry and organometallic chemistry are also covered. In addition, there are opportunities for research in cooperation with other departments such as Physics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Glass and Ceramics Engineering, and Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. The graduates of this department find rewarding careers in widely varying fields from energy to pharmaceuticals to teaching and learning and beyond. Many of them also find career or Ph.D. or Postdoctoral opportunities in the top ranked universities abroad.
The department of chemistry at BUET visions to be elevated to among the best chemistry departments in Asia with the mix of passionate faculty, dedicated co-workers, enthusiastic students, and highly skilled staff members. Currently our mission is to train the next generation of scientists and global citizens to face the future of the Earth. We all together are working hard to accomplish this mission.
